What to Pack for the Westfjords

Packing the right gear is essential. The region is known for dramatic cliffs, remote hiking trails, unpredictable weather, and limited services outside the main villages. Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, layering and waterproof gear will help you stay comfortable throughout your stay.
Essential Clothing
Weather in the Westfjords can change quickly, even during summer. Dress in layers so you can easily adjust throughout the day. If you're planning mountain hikes, keep in mind that snow can still linger in the mountains, even during the summer months, so it's important to be prepared for changing conditions.
Pack these essentials:
Waterproof hiking boots
Waterproof jacket and pants
Insulated mid-layer (fleece or down jacket)
Moisture-wicking base layers
Hiking pants
Warm hat and gloves
Wool or synthetic hiking socks
Comfortable warm clothes for evenings
Hiking Gear
Many of the Westfjords' popular attractions require walking on uneven terrain.
We also recommend to bring:
Daypack (20–30L)
Reusable water bottle
Trekking poles
Sunglasses
Sunscreen
Winter Packing Tips
If you're visiting between late autumn and early spring, we recommend packing:
Thermal base layers
Insulated waterproof boots
Microspikes for icy paths
Extra gloves, hat, and warm socks
Neck gaiter or balaclava
Swimming and Hot Spring Essentials
No trip to the Westfjords is complete without experiencing Iceland's bathing culture. Throughout the region, you'll find countless opportunities to soak in warm waters, from modern outdoor swimming pools with paid facilities to natural hot pots surrounded by breathtaking landscapes.
We highly recommend packing a swimsuit and a quick-drying travel towel so you can take advantage of these unique experiences wherever you go.
Swimming is a cherished part of Icelandic culture, and visiting a local pool or relaxing in a natural hot spring is one of the best ways to experience it. Unlike in some countries, swim caps are not required in Icelandic public swimming pools. However, all guests are expected to shower thoroughly without swimwear before entering the water, as part of local etiquette.
