Citizen Science
Projects
Here we share ongoing citizen science initiatives that you can take part in while experiencing the Westfjords, whether you are visiting or living here. Through these activities, you can contribute directly to scientific research in Iceland.
We are currently developing new citizen science projects in collaboration with local institutions and community members. We look forward to sharing more when they are ready.
Westfjords Mushroom Watch
A citizen science project inviting fungi enthusiasts to record mushroom observations in the Westfjords of Iceland, supporting fungal research and mapping species distribution.
Created in collaboration between Næra Westfjords and Icelandic mycologist Guðríður Gyða Eyjólfsdóttir. Join the project here.

Whale Wise
Whale Wise is a charity dedicated to advancing marine mammal conservation through scientific research, advocacy, and public engagement. The team works with citizen scientists across Iceland to collect whale sightings. Learn more about how you can take part here.

eBird
eBird is the world's largest birding community. If you're a birdwatcher, here you can explore which bird species can be found in different areas of the Westfjords and contribute your own sightings.
