01.

Cultivating connection.

We create spaces for genuine human encounters, where visitors can engage with members of the community and foster a deeper sense of connection with the place, its people, and themselves.

02.

Creating value, not demand.

We intentionally choose to avoid traditional marketing strategies centred on targets, urgency, and social media engagement.

Our best marketing is a happy and thriving community.

03.

Co-evolution.

Næra Westfjords is not a finished project but an evolving practice.

We are part of a living learning process and invite both the community and visitors to walk alongside us on this journey.

About Næra Westfjords

Story

Næra Westfjords was born in February 2026 with the support of the Westfjords Development Fund, as a local initiative based in Vesturbyggð. The name Næra (pronounced NYE-ra) comes from Icelandic and means “to nourish.” It is at the root of the Icelandic term for regenerative tourism, nærandi ferðaþjónusta, which translates literally as “nourishing tourism.”

Founded by Filipa, a mother of two, this project is the result of a life lived across different landscapes and cultures. Along the way, she has been a mountain guide, permaculturalist, environmental educator, green consultant, and project manager, always drawn to the relationship between people and nature.

With a Master’s degree in Ecotourism and a postgraduate background in Environment and Natural Resources, learning has not been confined to classrooms alone. Her path has been guided by a constant desire to learn, and through lived experience, by being in nature, working with communities, volunteering, and taking part in gatherings, workshops, and initiatives.

Næra Westfjords is therefore a project of continuous learning and experimentation in the pursuit of holistic stewardship and collective awareness, in this incredible place we have the privilege to call home.

Values

Næra Westfjords advocates for a slower pace of life and the creation of conditions that foster inner growth and collective wellbeing.

At this approach is the belief that meaningful relationships happen when nature, communities, and visitors co-exist in balance.

From this understanding, tourism is not separate from place, but part of a living system. It is shaped by it, and in turn, it shapes it. Therefore each journey is designed with the holistic understanding that ecosystem health, cultural continuity, community wellbeing, and visitor experience are interconnected.

Næra Westfjords exists as a small practice of choice and intention. Not to simply respond to demand as it is, but to participate in shaping what tourism can become when it is guided by care for place and responsibility towards what sustains it.

Intention

The intention behind Næra Westfjords is to design travel experiences that contribute positively to the places where they take place.

Our journeys reflect a slower way of travelling through the Westfjords and are designed to go beyond personal fulfilment. They are invitations to engage more consciously with a place, to understand it, to respect it, to learn from it, and to contribute to it in small but meaningful ways.

At a practical level, this means working closely with local actors, designing experiences that foster connection, and ensuring that value stays within the region.

The deeper intention is to support conditions where both people and place can benefit and grow. In this way, each journey becomes part of a wider effort to support the long term health, resilience, and vitality of the Westfjords.

It is a deliberate choice not to engage through social media or fast-click, automated booking systems on our website. For this reason, the human interaction throughout the booking process may feel as unhurried as the journeys themselves. We see this as an extension of our intention rather than a limitation. It also asks for a similar openness from those who choose to engage with us, a willingness to approach the experience with intention, patience, and a genuine interest in participating in this kind of exchange.

Responsability

At Næra Westfjords, responsibility is approached through honesty, inclusiveness, and simple but practical actions. We recognize that responsibility is about making conscious choices, learning continuously, and contributing positively where we can.

1. Environmental responsibility

Travel has an environmental impact. We acknowledge that international travelling to a remote island country such as Iceland, particularly over long distances, does not result in a low overall carbon footprint. We believe that being responsible begins with acknowledging this reality rather than making misleading sustainability claims.

While we cannot eliminate the environmental impact of travel, we can make thoughtful choices to reduce it at a local level. Our journeys are therefore designed to keep a light local footprint through small group sizes distributed throughout the year, longer stays with reduced mobility, local sourcing, and a focus on human-powered activities.

Beyond reducing impact, we seek to promote and develop projects that actively support regional scientific research and ecosystem restoration.

2. Social responsibility

Social responsibility is about relationships and inclusiveness. It means collaborating with local people, ensuring fair income distribution, supporting small entrepreneurs, and approaching all cultural encounters with respect and sensitivity.

3. Local development

Local development is understood as a shared effort. Through contributions, community-engaged activities, and the creation of local income opportunities, Næra Westfjords aims to support destination empowerment in a way that strengthens the communities it is part of.
